The National Eating Disorder Taskforce

A new National Taskforce has been launched to tackle eating disorder deaths across the United Kingdom.

The Taskforce is comprised of leading specialists from eating disorder sectors, including researchers, clinicians, individuals with lived experience, and leading eating disorder organisations.

Its mission is to engage with key stakeholders from government, industry, and the community to implement a comprehensive strategy to prevent people dying from eating disorders.

Richard Quigley MP says, ‘‘The Taskforce on Eating Disorder Deaths lays bare the true scale of the crisis we are facing but it also sends a powerful message that we are prepared to confront it head-on. The clear cross-party support for action is both encouraging and essential. Now it is up to all of us to ensure that these tragic deaths are not in vain. We must listen, learn, and act so that future lives are protected and lasting change is delivered’

The group has been established in line with the All-Party Parliamentary Group for Eating Disorders Chaired by Wera Hobhouse MP.

The Taskforce will focus on:

  • Policy Advocacy

  • Industry Collaboration

  • Public Education and Awareness

Although BMI should not be the sole marker, monitoring someone’s weight is part of eating disorder risk assessment. Taskforce members recognise that eating disorders can occur at any weight or shape, so services should avoid weight-based thresholds and instead consider the whole person, their symptoms, and history.
