Why we made the Dump The Scales film?
Over the last few years people affected by eating disorders have been faced with neglectful care, people have been crying out for help and denied support but still we have seen little to no action on really tackling the epidemic of eating disorders.
People are still being told they’re “not sick enough” or “too complex”, being discharged too early and in too many cases they’re dying.
What we face in eating disorder services is systemic failures as a direct result of stigmas, stereotypes, lack of training and lack of funding.
We didn’t make this film to shock people. We made it because the truth is already shocking.
Dump the Scales wanted to tell you the truth of what is happening in the UK right now because for too long, eating disorders have been misunderstood, minimised, and pushed to the sidelines. For too long people have turned away from what is really happening.
This film is about refusing to look away any longer.
Behind every statistic is a person. A daughter. A son. A friend. A family trying desperately to hold everything together. Eating disorders do not just affect one life, they ripple through entire families and communities.
Why Now?
Right now, we are in the middle of a crisis. Waiting lists are too long. Access to treatment is inconsistent. Too many people are being assessed based on weight, not need.
We hear the same stories again and again, people reaching out for help and being told they don’t meet the threshold. Families left to cope alone. Individuals becoming more unwell while they wait. We couldn’t keep having the same conversations behind closed doors or conversations where people are trying to silence us.
People are dying. This is not because eating disorders are untreatable. It is because the system is not working. What we are seeing is not isolated, it is systemic failure.
From the beginning, we knew this film had to feel real, Because eating disorders are not just diagnoses, they aren’t just for awareness weeks but they are daily battles that over 4 million in the UK face every single day. They are exhausting, isolating, and often invisible.
I know for some the film may seem shocking, and upsetting and there is part of me that wondered if we had gone too far with it but we want people to know the reality of what is going on. Showing the harrowing reality but holding that hope that people can and do recover.
This film is part of the launch of the Dump The Scales Eating Disorder Strategy Petition where we are calling for urgent, systemic change.
What You Can Do?
This film is not just a story. It is a call to action.
We are launching the Dump The Scales Eating Disorder Strategy Petition to demand urgent, systemic change, so that no more lives are lost to a system that should be protecting them.
